Rainstorms that happen during the summer can be unlike any other time of the year. If you get caught driving in  summer rain, follow these tips to keep yourself and other drivers safe on the wet streets.

Driving in the Summer Rain

Rain and wet road surfaces cause more accidents annually than any other type of weather condition, according to statistics. First and foremost, if you don’t have to drive during a rainstorm — don’t. However, if there is some place that you need to be when a storm is happening, keep these safe driving tips in mind:

1. Leave early and slow down

One of the main reasons we see so many accidents during wet weather is because people don’t give themselves enough time to travel, end up rushing, and experience an accident. If you know you have to be somewhere when it’s storming, leave early enough to be able to drive slowly and make it to your destination safely.

2. Wear your seatbelt

No matter the weather, if it’s sunny or if it’s raining, every person who rides with you in your vehicle should be properly buckled in. Your seatbelt will help protect you in the event of an accident, keeping you safe and secure within your car. If you don’t wear your seatbelt, you increase your risk of being ejected from the vehicle, which can be fatal. The United States Department of Transportation explains that one of the safest things you can do for you and your passengers is making sure that everyone bucket up. In 2020, the national seat belt use rate was 90.3% and saved an estimated 14,955 lives in previous years.

3. Make sure your windshield wipers aren’t worn

One of the most important safety features of your car when it rains are the windshield wipers. Your vehicle’s windshield wipers help clear off the rainfall and help you get the most visibility possible in the midst of a storm. While it’s still sunny out, take advantage and inspect your windshield wipers. You need efficient wiper blades to maintain proper visibility when a storm occurs. Windshield Experts explain that this is why you must get your wipers checked and replaced before the summer rain season begins. When choosing wipers, make sure that you are selecting ones that provide even pressure on the windshield, or else they won’t be able to evenly lean the glass. When your wipers are worn out, your windshield can actually become damaged, in addition to increasing your risk of an accident when driving during rainfall.

4. Increase driving quality with regular tune ups

Another thing you can do to keep you and your passengers safe year round is to make sure your car is running as it should. At Scott’s Auto, we help make sure your car is operating optimally by performing tune ups. Whether it’s inspecting your tires to make sure they’re properly gripping the road while it’s wet, or making sure the dozens of parts within your engine are lubricated and running as they should, our team is here to keep you safe on the road.
