Your cooling system provides a crucial function in your car’s engine, maintaining it’s temperature so that it can properly perform.  Generally speaking, we recommend an annual inspection for all cooling systems.  Here are some notable players within your cooling system:

Antifreeze

Were you aware that antifreeze does more than just ward off a freezing condition?  It also consists of anti-boil and anti-corrosive elements, passing from the cooling system to the radiator and engine to ensure everything remains within a safe temperature range.

For best results, you should change your antifreeze every two years or 24,000 miles.  Here at Scott’s Fort Collins Auto & Repair, we can change your antifreeze for you and also check for leaks or cracks that indicate a part needing replacement or repair to avoid issues on a larger scale down the road.

Cooling Fan

Your cooling fan moves air through the radiator and disperses heat from the engine to the exterior.  Our team at Scott’s can check the fan belt for proper tension and repair or replace your fan, if necessary.

Coolant Reservoir

The coolant reservoir lets you know how much coolant your system currently contains.  Scott’s will check this whenever performing an oil change.

Pressure Cap

The pressure cap, located on either the radiator or coolant reservoir, should be inspected annually.  If the cap is removed before the engine and contained fluids have had sufficient time to cool, the coolant could spray and cause burns and so should only be removed by someone properly trained.  Your team at Scott’s is experienced in all vehicle maintenance and repair.

Thermostat

The thermostat monitors temperature and adjusts the flow of coolant accordingly.  If your thermostat isn’t functioning properly, all sorts of problems could result.  Scott’s will always check this part when examining your cooling system.

Air Conditioning and Heating

Your heater and a/c are vital to the comfort of your ride.  We will check for leaks and loose belts and hoses, any potential issue.  Without temperature control, a thirty minute ride can seem like forever!  Stop by and let us make sure everything is in good shape.
