About Toyota

Toyota is one of the most well-known and respected brands in the automotive industry. If you own this kind of car, or you’re considering buying one, here are some fun facts about Toyota courtesy of MSN Cars that you might find interesting.

The company was originally called “Toyoda”

The founder of Toyota was named Kiichiro Toyoda, and the company was named after him. However, a name change came about in later years during the growth and expansion into the US. The name “Toyota” was chosen in part because the kanji can be written with eight strokes of the pen. Since eight is a lucky number in traditional Japanese culture, the new name stuck.

The Corolla is the best-selling car in the world

On average, Toyota sold a Corolla once every 37 seconds from 1966 to 2013. Overall sales reached a whopping 40 million units in that timeframe. The rate of purchase has been even higher since 2013, with a new Corolla driving off the lot somewhere in the world every 27 seconds. In 2016 alone, nearly 300,000 Corollas were sold worldwide.

Toyotas have excellent longevity and retain their resale value

One reason why people gravitate toward Toyotas is that they are known to last. In fact, 80 percent of Toyotas that were sold two decades ago are still on the road today. Not only is this great for people who want to drive the same car for 10 or 20 years, but it also benefits those looking for a car with solid resale value when they’re ready for an upgrade.

Toyota has more patents than any other company

When businesses invent pioneering technology, they apply for patents to protect the intellectual rights to the idea. Toyota has about one million total patents, including 260,000 granted patents and 940,000 patent applications. Bet you didn’t know that about Toyota!

Toyota leads the way in green technology

  • The company has sold more than 10 million hybrids globally.
  • The most popular hybrid car in the world is the Toyota Prius, with over 6 million units sold since its introduction in 1997.
  • In 2014, Toyota became the first automaker to sell a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle commercially. It’s called the Mirai.
  • Solar-powered cars—namely Prius Plug-in Hybrids with a solar roof—are the next big thing to expect about Toyota.
  • The company has a goal to reduce CO2 emissions from all its vehicles by 90 percent within the next 30 years.

Toyota is admired globally

While the soft drink company has an impressive presence in over 100 countries, Toyota vehicles are found in 170 of the world’s 195 countries. The company also has 53 manufacturing facilities around the globe. In 2017, Toyota was named one of the World’s Most Admired Companies for the third straight year.

Toyota has a huge research and development budget
