If you’re driving on the road and suddenly feel your car begin to shake or feel vibration, do you know what it could be? In this article we’re going over what it could mean if you feel your car suddenly begin to vibrate or shake. From worn out coils to bad fuel, this is what you need to know.

Is Your Car Shaking?

If you notice your car shaking or vibrating on the road, that’s not normal. Vibration is usually caused by an out of balance or defective tire, however, there could be other reasons, too. You could find the car shaking in an up-and-down motion. Further, you may feel the shaking through your seat, steering wheel, or even when you’re pressing down on the brake pedal. DR1V explains that if you begin to feel this movement in your car, you should look being paying attention for the following signs:

  • Does the vibration get worse as you increase speed?
  • Is the vibration or shaking only happening at certain speeds? If so, what speeds?
  • Does the vibration seem to be coming through the seat?
  • Is there any abnormal noise when the car shakes?
  • Does the car vibrate while standing still with the engine running?
  • Is the movement coming from the steering wheel?

Asking yourself these questions and knowing the answer can better help you and your mechanic determine just what is going on.

Common Causes of Car Vibration

Wheel and tire problems

The main reason drivers will feel shaking or vibration is due to issues with the wheels or tires. Problems with the wheels or tires could include improper balance, uneven tire wear, separate tire tread, out of round tires, damaged wheels, and loose lug nuts. Many of these issues can be caught before they begin shaking your car just by going to your routine tune ups.

Worn suspension parts and joints

DR1V explains that another common reason for car vibration is looseness in the suspension or steering system components. This will result in your steering wheel shaking. If you are noticing the shaking in the steering wheel, your mechanic will need to check the ball joints and other components to find the root cause.

Engine and transmission

If you feel the vibration when you are driving and it continues even when you’re sitting idle with the engine running, the problem is more than likely coming from the engine and transmission. The shaking could be due to a loose engine or transmission mount or a broken radiator fan.

Damaged or worn brake rotors

If you feel vibration in your steering wheel and the brake pedal, it could indicate a brake rotor issue.

Is it Safe to Drive While Your Car is Shaking?

If you begin to feel persistent shaking in your car, it’s best that you get to the problem right away before continuing to drive. Continuing to drive with the shaking can result in further damaging parts, ruining your tires, and other costly problems that could be avoided by a quick trip to your mechanic.
